On my last visit to Bally's Total Fitness using an advertisement for a free pass that I saw in the
newspaper, I was shocked and dismayed by the awful service there. Back in the 1980s, I had signed up with Bally's for a three year contract which allowed me to renew at $99. per year for the rest of my life. That was a good deal, but a few years ago it seemed to me that the service at Bally's had really gone down the tubes. Bally's had a lot of snotty, obnoxious teenagers working there. Most of these poor kids were on commission pay, and they had to badger the members around the gym to sell vitamins, protein, personal training, and other services along those lines so that they could earn money. I would usually get at least two solicitations from Bally's "trainers" every time I went to the gym. These people were usually incredibly enthusiastic, and would interrupt people in the middle of lifting weights just to pitch them some vitamins or to persuade someone to do personal training. Therefore, about five years ago, when my membership came up for renewal, I let it expire.
Update: After renewing my membership last week, I went
to work out there a week later and of course my membership card did not work. The cash payment had not been processed. Many years ago when I last renewed my membership, it took the local Bally's Total Fitness gym about three months to clear my membership because I was a "corporate" renewal. This time I renewed at the local gym itself (non-corporate), and so the "corporate" office had not processed my membership. According to the folks at the front desk, Bally's processes the payments manually, by reviewing the receipts as which each gym mails to the main office in California. So it can take two weeks before they process a cash payment!!
Update 2: Now that I have a membership, I have gone to Bally's a few times because they do have about fifty cardio
machines so it is almost guaranteed that there will be one available. No more Stinky Old Guy to deal with at the other gym which only has a handful of elliptical trainers and cross-trainers. Bally's gym has lots of workout machines for doing all kinds of exercises, but unfortunately the gym is usually packed wall-to-wall and I have yet to get to do any of the machines that are not available at my other regular gym. All the unusual and/or new machines literally have a line of people waiting to do the exercises. I don't think I
have the patience to go through that. I would rather just workout at my old gym. So the only time I have been going to Bally's is when I want to do cardio only and/or it is on my way. The Bally's is closer to my house, so I would like to go there more often. There are also tons of hot babes walking around. It is literally a cornucopia of eye candy. Lots of pretty girls in tight outfits! It may sound un-politically correct, but seeing cute women who look great is very motivating. Is that sexist? Is that hard to understand? I am only looking!! I imagine that women are equally motivated to see buff guys working out at the gym?
Personal Trainers and Toilets: The gym is on the second floor and the toilets, sh
owers, and lockers are on the first. So if you have to take a quick squirt after doing some cardio, taking a restroom break will be a five-minute mission. The only other downside is that Bally's still has teenage punky "personal trainers" who are constantly walking around the gym to mingle among the people working out so that they can get asked a question and make their pitch. At least it seems they won't talk to you unless you talk to them, and that is a major improvement over the way it used to be, when the punky trainers would literally stalk people around the gym asking them to sign up for "personal training." I doubt that any of these teenagers are certified personal trainers. There are also a couple of older personal trainers that seem to be the managers.
Update 3: I went to Bally's this morning at about 5:30 a.m., and the cardio was pretty full but not packed. That is great. I was very happy to get my cardio done in a different environment. I think I was getting burned out at the other gym, seeing the same people over and over again, including the stinky people and the other eccentric types. One thing that I like about Bally's is that everyone seems to be there so they can look good. I will probably have to buy another set of gym clothes...? Not sure how I feel about that, since I have never gone to the gym to look like good; but why not?

I love the snottly little bastards who are pushing the personal training who have never been overweight in their lives. Give me a trainer who has walked in my shoes and I may take him up on it. Actually give me the will power to do what I know is right and it will be fine...
Posting daily starting tomorrow.. Let's ge it ON....
Glad your liking your gym. My fav gym used to be an all women's one but now I go to the Y and it's good. Young and old, sweaty and not, christians and regular folk. I really don't go to look at hunks but hey you can't help but look. But, hopefully the one at home (sign other) still lights your fire!
Have a good week spider! I'm gonna lose, I'm gonna lose. That's my mantra this week.
Looking never hurt anyone, in spite of what Juliet may say because nobody looks at her.
funny video spidey. Have a great weekend!!!!!
Dude, the hot women at the gym motivate me immensely! I look at them and fantasize about looking like that myself! I am happily married and I rarely pay any attention to the men there - I am just checking out the woman on the treadmill in front of me and asking myself, "Could my butt look like that??" I compare myself to other women waaaay too much!
Hi !
Good thing your at ease with your gym, that is important in working out for you to be able to concentrate on your goal rather than noticing things you hate in there. Anyway, i was wondering if you might want to check out the site i found about Bally Total Fitness since you were one of their customers. You might find it interesting as well as resourceful in any way.
